SayChar is designed to be simple: type in the field, and every character is shown with its phonetic name. Tap Read Aloud to hear the whole string spoken with clear case and symbol names.

How to use SayChar

  1. Open SayChar.
  2. Tap the password field and type or paste the text you want to say out loud.
  3. Each character appears in the list below with its phonetic name (for example, A → ALPHA, a → alpha, @ → At).
  4. Tap Read Aloud to hear the whole string. Tap Stop to interrupt playback at any time.
  5. Tap the × button next to the field to clear it.

Frequently asked questions

Does SayChar send my text anywhere?
No. SayChar does not use the network at all. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged, or stored beyond the current session. See the Privacy Policy.
How does it tell the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters?
When reading aloud, SayChar prefixes letters with "Capital" or "lowercase" so listeners can hear the case clearly. Both the visual list and the spoken output use the same phonetic name (for example, "ALPHA") but the read-aloud output makes the case explicit.
Which characters are supported?
All printable ASCII characters (space through tilde) are supported: letters, digits 0–9, and common symbols such as !, @, #, $, %, &, *, (, ), -, _, =, +, [, ], {, }, \, |, ;, :, ', ", ,, ., <, >, /, ?, and the backtick.
What about non-ASCII characters, like accented letters or emoji?
Characters outside the printable ASCII range are labeled "Unknown." They can still be pasted into the field, but they will not have a phonetic name assigned.
Can I change the voice or the reading speed?
SayChar uses your device's built-in speech synthesizer at a comfortable dictation speed. You can adjust the system voice under Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices on iOS.
Does SayChar work with VoiceOver?
Yes. Each row in the list is grouped so VoiceOver announces the character together with its phonetic name. See the Accessibility statement for more.
Is there a subscription or in-app purchase?
No. SayChar is a one-time purchase (or free — see the App Store listing). There are no subscriptions, ads, or trackers.
Do you offer a Mac or iPad version?
SayChar is a universal iOS app and runs on iPhone and iPad. It also runs on Apple silicon Macs through the iOS-on-Mac compatibility layer if the developer has enabled it for that release.
