Finally Back

A few weeks ago, I attended a celebration of life for a dear friend, Gordon Rees. It was quite a touching gathering and his children spoke. One of his daughters shared the lyrics of one of Gordon’s favorite songs, “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan. This is a song I have heard many times and knew many of the lyrics. Naturally, for me anyway, my thoughts turned to life and meanings for me. Since then, I have learned the lyrics and I’m learning the chords on the guitar.

But as I have sung this song many times now, I have thought how profound the lyrics are. On the other hand, I have thought that they don’t go quite far enough. They are missing some of the insights that the further light and knowledge the gospel brings. I never knew my grandparents but I got to thinking what my grandfather might have said to me if he had had the chance.

Finally Back

My grandfather called me to his side one day and looked me in the eye,
Always tell the truth my son and never, ever lie.

Your word must be your bond my boy in all you say and do
And keep commitments for every job and always see them through.

Your life must be one of righteousness, an example to every man
And God has sent his Spirit here to help us see His plan.

Temptations will always mark your way with sin at every turn
It’s only by resisting them, we grow and begin to learn.

Service is the only way back to live with God
Jesus showed us by the life He led and every step he trod.

We are not only bits of clay or children sent to earth
Our mission is to follow God and prove our eternal worth.

A man is only worth the time he’s given while he’s here
The people that you’ve helped along is what God will want to hear.

May the scriptures always be your guide as you plan your earthly life
And remember God is watching you as you deal with toil and strife.

May you toil each day to earn your way and find joy in all you do.
May your heart be filled with gladness and see good in every view.

You will only be a child on earth for such a little while,
And then you’ll walk down life’s short path to end your earthly trial.

You’ll then stand before your loving God and hope you will not lack,
And tell Him you may have fallen down but now you’re finally back.
