Tahoe Vacation

This poem was written in North Shore, Lake Tahoe at the condo of our friends, the Gerbers.  It was a return trip to the condo.  We had been there with another couple, the previous year and it was a trip plagued with hurt feelings and misunderstandings.  We had planned to go rafting one day and hiking the next.  The rafting trip turned out great.  Everyone had a good time and the weather was very pleasant.  The next day the weather turned cold and in fact it snowed in Truckee. So from then on the kid had to watch videos and entertain themselves.  It turned out to be a fairly nice trip and went a long way towards erasing the memories of the previous trip.

Tahoe Vacation

Our families have returned

Another hour of rolling dice

To Tahoe's magic spell.

And adding up the score.

To prove that we can live in peace

We've sat around and talked so much

Without a living... oh well.

Our tongues and butts are sore.

Our children have their sticker books

Yes, we've come to have some fun

And painted finger nails.

And share some time together.

Our wives have got their credit cards

And that's just what we all have done,

In search of clothes and sales.

In spite of wind and weather.

The condo still has all its charm

We've eaten till our jaws are tired.

With hangers you must hunt.

Our tummies think they'll pop

The doors and sills still shield the cold

Anyone with common sense

And still require a grunt.

Would have the brains to stop.

We sailed the Truckee on a raft

We'd like to thank the kids for all

And squealed at every curve.

The things they haven't done.

The crew was valiant to the last

And Dave and Nancy for being hosts

Though some had lost their nerve

Of days and nights of fun.

We came to hike the Sierra's trails

We love you for your happy smiles

And revel in her show.

And all the things we lack.

But mother nature played a trick

And if we've not offended you,

And now we're shoveling snow

We hope you'll have us back.

We watched T.V. until our eyes

Gale L. Wolfenbarger

Were rolling in their place.

26 May 1988

We played the games we'd brought from home

Till none of us could face.
