My Greatest Gift

I awoke this morning knowing that it was Valentine's Day and that I hadn't written in a Valentine card for my sweetheart. So before doing anything else I went to my file cabinet where I keep cards to select a Valentine, only to find that I didn't have one. However, I did have a few “no sentiment” cards and one looked like it was great for a Valentine. As I opened the card and looked at the acres of blank card, I thought how much I would have to write to do it justice. Then I thought about how long it had been since I had written a poem in one of her cards. This poem was the result.

My Greatest Gift

The day I wed my sweetheart, my hair was dark as clay,
But now my locks though thinning have turned to silver gray.

I marvel that she knows me now when wrinkles mark my brow.
My beard, which once so very dark, is a snowy silver now.

As I think how she has come to me, I'm filled with gratitude.
Though my site has dimmed, she's still the same, through eyes of love she's viewed.

She's still my greatest gift that's come from God above
Of all my treasures, the greatest still, is my sweetheart's precious love.

I don't know how it was that chance has favored me
To win a prize so wonderful for all the world to see.

But every day I live my heart is filled with joy
To know that God has given me what death cannot destroy.

I love her now and will love her then for all eternity.
I'll thank my Lord eternally for the gift He's given me.
